MOSCOW, Dec 23 (PRIME) -- Russia may set the gas price at U.S. $340–360 per 1,000 cubic meters for Ukraine, Energy Minister Alexander Novak told reporters on Tuesday.
“I do not know what the price will be. Earlier, when we discussed it in October, we expected that it will amount to $360 under forecasts based on current prices. Nowadays the price may be lower. All in all, the price for the next quarter will be calculated based on prices for the previous nine months. $340–360, I believe,” he said.
The Russian gas price for Ukraine is set at $378 per 1,000 cubic meters in November–December.
If Ukraine does not repay a $1.65 billion debt for Russian gas in December, Russia will suspend supplies to the country, Novak said.
Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz Ukrainy expects the price for Russian gas to stand at less than U.S. $340 per 1,000 cubic meters in January–March 2015.
Russia is ready to negotiate with Ukraine a discount after March, but Ukraine has not yet put forward the idea. Without a discount the price will stand at around $440 per 1,000 cubic meters from April, as the discount of $100 per 1,000 cubic meters expires by April, Novak said.
The gas contract, which was concluded between Russia, Ukraine and the European Commission in October, foresees Russian gas supplies to Ukraine with a 100$ discount per 1,000 cubic meters if Ukraine makes prepayments on time and repays part of its overdue debts.
